The body of a high school senior with plans to be an athlete at East Carolina University was found Tuesday morning by search crews in James City County.
Trevor Times of Williamsburg, Virginia had signed with ECU to play golf next year.
Crews found his body around 10:20 a.m. about 35 feet off shore in six feet of water. Police say on Memorial Day the 18-year-old was trying to swim to a sand bar 75 yards offshore when witnesses said they saw him in trouble and then go under.
College Creek is a popular swimming spot, despite signs warning of a strong rip tide and police say it is unsafe for swimming or wading.
The teen's body was found with the help of side scan sonar.
ECU Golf Coach Press McPhaul says they are saddened to hear of Times' death. "Our hearts are heavy with the news of Trevor's passing," said McPhaul. "He followed this team closely and was often sending us emails or texts encouraging us to work hard and play well. He was excited to be a Pirate and we were looking forward to his arrivals in the fall. My prayers are with his family."
