GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina senior Akeem Richmond will participate in the 2014 State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships on Thursday, April 3, at Moody Coliseum on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Intersport announced Tuesday. The 26th annual event will be televised live on ESPN beginning at 9 p.m. EDT.
"It means a lot to me to receive this opportunity," said Richmond, who made nine 3s against SMU at Moody Coliseum in 2013. "It was one of the goals I set for myself prior to the start of the season. I'm so blessed to be able to compete against some of the greatest shooters in college basketball."
The field for the Quicken Loans Men's 3-Point Championship also includes the NCAA's all-time leader in 3-point field goals made Travis Bader (Oakland) along with Andre Dawkins (Duke), Luke Hancock (Louisville), Marshall Henderson (Ole Miss), Brady Heslip (Baylor) and Ethan Wragge (Creighton).
A native of Sanford, N.C., Richmond led all NCAA Division I players with 155 made 3s this year, third highest single-season total in Division I history. He also led all NCAA Division I players with an average of 4.56 3-pointers made per game as well as attempts with 392. His per game average ranks as ninth highest in NCAA history and second in Conference USA.
Richmond garnered All-Conference USA second team honors, finishing second in the league in scoring (18.0 ppg), while shooting 40.1 percent from the field, 39.5 percent behind the arc and 84.8 percent at the foul line. In fact, 86.9 percent (392 of 451) of his field goal tries came from beyond the arc.
After leading C-USA with 105 made 3-pointers last season, he broke the league's single-season record by 10 this year and became just the third player in conference history to record 100 3-pointers in multiple seasons. He was just the fourth player in the 19-year history of the league to average more than four 3s per game.
Richmond made an ECU and C-USA single-game record 11 3-pointers on March 11 vs. UTSA in the opening round of the C-USA Championship, breaking his own record of 10 3s made against Fayetteville State (12/3) and Campbell (1/2) earlier in the year. He is the only player in the last 15 years to make 10 or more 3-pointers in a game three times in the same season.
Richmond finished his career ranked seventh on the NCAA Division I career list for 3-point field goals made with 416. In just two years at ECU he set the school career record for 3-pointers made (260) and attempted (642). He was awarded #SCTop10 Play of the Day on April 2, 2013 for his buzzer-beating game-winning 3-pointer against Weber State in the CIT title game.
