ECU Tops Stony Brook, 2-1, To Take Series

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Philip Clark’s sac fly in the seventh inning plated Jay Cannon for the go ahead run giving No. 30 East Carolina (7-2) a 2-1 win over Stony Brook (4-2) Saturday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win the Pirates claim the weekend series and will look for their second weekend sweep of the young season.

With the game tied at one, Cannon led off the frame with a double down the right field line and took third on Tim Younger’s ground out to second. Clark stepped into the box and sent a first pitch offering from Brandon McNitt (1-1) to center scoring Cannon and giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

Tanner Merritt (1-1) notched his first collegiate win working 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief after taking the ball from starter Tyler Joyner in the seventh inning. Joyner scattered seven hits in 6 1/3 frames allowing a run with two walks and a pair of punch outs. Sophomore Drew Reynolds recorded his fifth save of the season in a scoreless ninth.

McNitt tossed the second complete game of the weekend for the Seawolves in a losing effort. The right-hander held the Pirates to just four hits over eight innings where he surrendered two runs (one earned) with three walks and four strikeouts.

ECU took an early lead in the bottom of the first thanks to John Wooten’s RBI single through the left side the plated Jack Reinheimer, who reached on an error to start the stanza off the glove of first baseman Kevin Courtney. Bryan Bass followed Reinheimer with a walk setting up the first of two Wooten base hits on the night. Wooten also tripled in the game in the eighth with two outs, but was left stranded when Zach Wright popped out to second to end the threat.

Stony Brook knotted the game at one in the third on Kevin Krause’s single through the right side scoring Travis Jankowski from third after he doubled off Joyner to start the frame.

The Pirates and Seawolves will be back in action on Sunday, Mar. 4 at 1 p.m. (ET).
