ECU Golf Team Sits 16th At NCAA Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – East Carolina shot an 11-over 295 on day one of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships at the Riviera Country Club to tie for 16th-place on Tuesday.

The Pirates sit five shots out of eighth place after round one. The top eight teams after 54 holes of competition advance to the match play, which begins Friday, to determine the national champion.

Second-ranked Alabama holds a three shot lead over SEC rival Auburn and Florida after 18 holes. The Crimson tide posted a 1-over 285, while the Tigers and Gators each recorded a 4-over 289. UCLA and Oklahoma are tied for fourth at 5-over with five other teams tied for sixth at 6-over.

Atop the individual leader board after 18 holes is UCLA’s Anton Arboleda at 4-under 67. Arboleda set the tone for his round with an eagle on No. 1, which was followed by six birdies on the remaining 17 holes. He holds a one stroke lead over Corey Connors of Kent State and Florida’s Tyler McCumbers. Six additional players are two strokes off the lead at 2-under.

Leading the way for ECU was senior Harold Varner, who fired an even-par 71 on day one. He tied for 14th after a strong performance on the final nine holes. After shooting 1-over 36 on the front nine, he came back in 1-under 35, which included three birdies and an eagle. Varner birdied No. 10 to begin the back nine and then chipped in on No. 11 for an eagle to move to 2-under. He recorded two bogeys and five pars on the final seven holes to drop back to par.

The second highest finisher in the field for ECU today was Adam Stephenson who posted a 1-over 72 to tie for 27th- place. Stephenson shot 2-over on the front nine, but birdied No. 10 and 11 to drop to even-par. However, he bogeyed 13 and 16 to move back to 2-over before he birdied No. 17 and finished the day at plus-1.

Junior Zach Edmondson shot a 4-over 75 for the Pirates on day one. He pared 10 holes and recorded three birdies on day one and had a chance to finish at 2-over, but a stray tee shot on 18 cost him a double bogey to end his round.

Rounding out the field for the Pirates were sophomore Ryan Eibner, who fired a 6-over 77, and senior David Watkins with an 11-over 82.

The Pirates will return to the links on Wednesday, May 30 with a tee time of 1:10 p.m. (4:10 p.m. EDT). Alabama, Texas and California will get the second round started at 7 a.m. PT.
