ECU Drops Tourney Opener To Purdue, 6-4

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Purdue (4-0) scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning and held on for a 6-4 victory against East Carolina (4-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Ninth Annual Keith LeClair Classic, which is being held at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The Pirates had chances to tie the game or take the lead in the eighth and ninth innings. With runners on first and second and two outs in the eighth, Chris Gosik lined out to Purdue third baseman Cameron Perkins ending the threat.

ECU had the potential game-winning run on first in the ninth as it loaded the bases against Nick Wittgren before Chase McDonald grounded into a game-ending double play.

The Boilermakers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Jack Reinheimer misplayed a ground ball off the bat of Kevin Plawecki that scored Tyler Spillner and Eric Charles.

ECU knotted the game at two in the bottom half of the first thanks to a two-run homer by Corey Thompson, his second-straight game with a round tripper. Reinheimer led off the inning by reaching on an error and Thompson evened the contest with a blast over the wall in left.

Purdue would reclaim the lead in the third, 3-2, when Cameron Perkins drove in Tyler Spillner with an infield single.

The Pirates responded with a run in the bottom half of the third, 3-3, stanza when Thompson reached on an error by the right fielder, Battett Serrato. Tim Younger led off the inning with a single and eventually scored on Serrato's miscue.

A three-run sixth by Purdue seized control of the contest, 6-3. Serrato broke the three-all with an RBI single through the right side scoring Eric Charles. Ryan Bridges followed with a chopper to Reinheimer, whose throw to second for a potential force out sailed over the head of Younger and into right field, scoring Plawecki. Angelo Cianfrocco capped the Boilermakers' scoring with an RBI ground out.

After Jay Cannon's single loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth frame, ECU trimmed its deficit to 6-4 when Chris Gosik drove in John Wooten with an RBI ground out.

The Pirates were unable to get any closer as they stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the sixth and ninth innings.

Joe Haase (1-0) earned the win for Purdue after giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and recorded a pair of punch outs.

Senior Kevin Brandt (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season allowing six runs (three earned) on seven base knocks. The southpaw struck out four while walking just one. Freshman Jeff Hoffman tossed two scoreless innings of relief in his second outing of the young season.

Offensively for the Pirates, Cannon, McDonald and Zach Wright each had multi-hit performances, while Thompson drove in a team-best two runs.
