ECU Women Top Monmouth 64-49

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – For the second day in a row, Britny Edwards notched a double-double for the East Carolina women’s basketball team as the Pirates defeated Monmouth, 64-49, at the Navy Classic on Saturday at Alumni Hall on the campus of the United States Naval Academy.

The Pirates were led offensively by Britny Edwards who poured in a game-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds to go along with a pair of steals. The redshirt senior center shot 56-percent and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the line en route to being the only Pirate named to the Navy Classic All-Tournament Team. Tatiana Chapple turned in an impressive performance as she tallied 12 points, six boards, two blocks, and a steal. Celeste Stewart was consistent for ECU (6-2) once again as the senior point guard helped lead her squad with an eight-point, five-assist, three-rebound, two-steal effort. Whitny Edwards led the ECU defense grabbing 10 rebounds, with six points, five assists and a steal.

Chapple got things started for East Carolina as the sophomore forward drove the ball to the basket and laid it in for the first points of the ball game. Monmouth (2-5) countered on an Abigail Martin jumper to even the score at two at the 18:13 mark of the first half and that would be all the Hawks were able to muster for the next six-plus minutes as the Pirates went on a 12-0 run to take a 14-2 advantage. Monmouth did not score again until Alysha Womack connected for a jumper at 11:57 and even then, ECU retaliated and took another 12-point lead (22-10) with 8:38 left to go in the first half.

ECU’s offense shot 50-percent in the first half and the Pirate defense was solid as it did not allow the Hawks to connect for a three-point field goal while limiting Monmouth to 30.8-percent shooting from the field. With the stout defense and the surging offense, the Pirates led by as many as 20 (34-14) in the first half and took an 11-point (36-25) lead into the locker room.

The second half begun just as the first had – Chapple notched the first points of the half to give the Pirates a 13-point (38-25) advantage. Monmouth battled back and slowly chipped away at East Carolina’s lead and eventually cut the Pirates’ lead to six (47-41) with 8:00 remaining in the game. However, the Pirates were not deterred by the Hawks’ efforts, and ECU pushed its lead back up to double-digits on a three-point shot off the hands of Colleen Marshall (57-45). The Pirates continued to penetrate and pushed their lead to as many as 18 points (64-46) in the second half and finished the game with a 15-point advantage (64-49).

East Carolina shot nearly 40-percent in the game and grabbed 48 rebounds while collecting 15 second-chance points. The Pirates forced Monmouth into 22 turnovers and limited the Hawks to 31.8-percent shooting.

Monmouth was led offensively by Womack who finished the game with a team-high 17 points and two steals. Chevannah Paalvast notched 10 points, with four rebounds, two steals and a block, while Abigail Martin concluded the contest with eight points and four boards.

The Pirates will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 4, when they host N.C. Central at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
