GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team dropped both games of a Conference USA doubleheader to Marshall on Sunday afternoon at the ECU Softball Stadium. The Pirates fell, 9-1, in the first game before suffering a 7-1 setback in the second contest.

Senior infielder Kristi Oshiro combined to hit 4-for-7 with three extra-base hits and two RBI on the day, and Jordan Lewis finished the day 3-for-4 overall with one walk to lead the East Carolina (15-10, 4-4 C-USA) offense.

Marshall (9-19, 3-5 C-USA) got off to a quick start in game one, hitting back-to-back home runs with two outs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.

The Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the third inning after a two-out triple by Shelby Johnson and an infield RBI single by Kristi Oshiro brought her in to score, cutting the deficit to two.

The Thundering Herd pushed across a run in their next at-bats, before adding three more in the top of the fifth inning to extend its advantage to 7-1. Marshall scored twice more in the top of the sixth inning and held on for the run-rule victory in six innings.

Oshiro went 3-for-3 in the game with two doubles and an RBI, while starting pitcher Sarah Christian (11-4) struck out seven in six innings of work.

Game two featured a pitcher’s duel for more than six innings, as junior Caroline Umphlett (3-2) allowed just four hits and two unearned runs in 6.2 innings, before a two-out, five-run rally by the Thundering Herd in the top of the seventh inning put the game out of reach.

After Umphlett allowed a leadoff single to the first batter of the game, she retired nine-straight Marshall hitters, but the Thundering Herd scored two unearned runs after three East Caroline errors in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.

ECU did not respond until the bottom of the sixth inning when Oshiro, the first batter of the inning, belted a monster home run over the scoreboard on a 2-0 pitch to cut the deficit in half. The Pirates left two runners on at the conclusion of the inning.

Marshall placed two runners on with two outs in the top of the seventh, and capitalized with several hits and a walk to put up five runs in the frame to put the game out of reach.

Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin recorded her team-leading fifth three-hit game of the season with a 3-for-4 performance, as Lewis went 2-for-3.

The two sides will close out the series on Saturday, March 22 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m., at the ECU Softball Stadium.
