WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington scored seven unanswered runs and used 13 hits to cruise to a 10-3 victory over East Carolina Tuesday night at Brooks Field. With the win the Seahawks improve to 13-7, while the Pirates fall to 11-9.
With the scored tied at one-all going to the bottom of the third, Ryan LaGrange belted his third home of the season, a three-run shot, staking the Seahawks to a 4-1 lead and never looked back. Hunter Ridge singled up the middle with one out and Corey Dick was walked with two outs before coming home on LaGrange's shot to left center.
Blaze Tart (2-1) picked up the win surrendering one run (earned) on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings. The Seahawks used four hurlers over the final 3.1 innings with Jack Lane (0.1 IP), Kelly Secrest (1.0 IP) and Nick Monroe (1.0 IP) throwing scoreless outings. Rick Holden gave up a pair of unearned runs on one hit with two punch outs in one inning of work.
Tyler Bolton (0-1) suffered the loss in his first collegiate start giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts in four innings. Jake Harris allowed three runs (all earned) on four hits in two frames, while Dylan Dickens was touched for three runs (one earned) on a pair of hits. Grayson Bailey (0.1 IP) and Brett Mabry (0.2 IP) tossed a scoreless eighth frame.
Jay Cannon put the Pirates up 1-0 in the second inning when he blasted his second home run of the season sending a line drive over the left center field fence.
Terence Connelly knotted the game at one with a backside single through the left side of the field that scored Dick from second base. Dick reached on a fielding error by Zach Houchins at third and moved to second when LaGrange was hit by a Bolton pitch.
In the top of the sixth, ECU had a chance to cut into the Seahawks three-run lead. Dylan Brown reached on a bunt single, Cannon and Nick Thompson followed with walks to load the bases for Lowery. UNCW went to the bullpen bringing in the side-arm hurler Lane, who fanned Lowery leaving the bases loaded.
The Seahawks struck for three more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 7-1. Pinch hitter Luis Renvill singled home Connelly, Hunter Ridge stroked his fourth hit of the night singling home Michael Bass. Luke Dunlap plated the final round of the stanza scoring Renvill from second base before he was thrown out at second on a ball that bounced over Bryan Bass' head that trickled into right field.
A two-out error by Renvill in center field allowed ECU to score a pair of runs in the seventh cutting into UNCW's lead, 7-3. Houchins walked with one out and took third on Travis Watkins' double to right center before Renvill dropped a fly ball off the bat of Jack Reinheimer on what would have been the final out of the frame.
UNCW scored three more times in the seventh padding its lead to 10-3.
Cannon led the Pirates offensively reaching base three times on a pair of hits and a walk. Brown and Lowery each extended their hit streaks to three games with singles, while Chase McDonald had a pinch hit single in the ninth.
The Pirates will return to action Wednesday, Mar. 20 when they play host to High Point at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. (ET).
