ECU Quaterback Rob Kass Arrested

East Carolina's sophomore quarterback is facing a drunk driving arrest. Rob Kass was arrested in Pitt County on a charge of driving while impaired. The state court web site says Kass' court date is November 13th.

Kass was arrested by Greenville police Saturday morning at 2:55 am. The 20 year old was one of eight people caught in a DWI checkpoint early Saturday morning.

Greenville police say Kass was arrested at a checkpoint at East 5th Street and Green Springs Road. Police say his blood alcohol content was .19. A person with a .08 is considered impaired in North Carolina.

Kass is just 20 years old and if convicted faces loss of his driver's license for one year because he is underage.

Today, Coach Skip Holtz says he's not commenting yet about this weekend's arrest. It's not clear at this point what impact Kass' arrest will have with his status on the team.

Kass was expected to make his first start as a Pirate this Saturday against Virginia Tech. Kass went to high school in Longwood Florida but has ties to the state. His father played quarterback for Wake Forest before transferring to another school.

Holtz recruited the 20 year-old signal caller and Kass grew into the back-up roll last year. He set career highs in passing yards and completions in the final game of the 2006 season..

Kass spent the majority of spring and summer practices as the starting quarterback. Kass's likely backup is Sophomore Brett Clay.

He's not the first ECU player to have problems with alcohol under the Coach Holtz era.

In August 2005 Jamar Flournoy, ECU's third-leading tackler was suspended for a year for violating team rules. That stemmed from an alcohol related ticket. Flournoy was charged after police say he stepped out of a bar with an open container of alcohol.
