RALEIGH, N.C. - N.C. State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Wolfpack a 3-2 win over No. 22 East Carolina Wednesday night at Doak Field in non-conference action.
Caleb Mangum's RBI single with the game knotted at two plated Pat Ferguson for the game-winning run. Joe Florio reached base to lead off the inning after being hit by a Neitz pitch. Ramon Corona walked for the fourth time of the game putting runners on first and second. After a sac bunt by Marcus Jones moved the runners up 90 feet, Ryan Pond's grounder to short pulled the Pack within one, 2-1. Ferguson followed with an RBI single to left of off Shane Mathews scoring Corona setting up the go ahead run.
Shane Mathews suffered the loss for the Pirates (21-9) falling to 2-3 on the season, while Andrew Taylor drew even to 1-1 for the Wolfpack (23-8).
ECU starter Mike Anderson worked 4 2/3 innings giving up two hits, no runs, walked four and struck out three in his second start of the season. Senior Jason Neitz made his 17th appearance in relief working 2 1/3 innings allowing one hit and one run before giving way to Mathews.
Wolfpack freshman starter Nate Karns lasted 4 1/3 innings allowing five hits, two runs (earned) with two walks and two punchouts before giving way to Jake Kensmoe. Kensmoe (2/3 IP), entered the game with runners on first and second, got out of the jam when Eldridge grounded into a 6-4-3 inning ending double-play. Clayton Shunick (2 1/3 IP, one hit, one strikeout), Taylor (1/3 IP, one walk) and Eryk McConnell (1 IP, one strikeout) also action from the bullpen. McConnell was credited with his seventh save of the season.
Harrison Eldridge put the Pirates on the board in the fourth inning when he took a Karns 3-1 pitch to dead centerfield for his third home run of the season for an early 1-0 ECU lead.
Brandon Henderson put the Pirates up 2-0 in the fifth frame when he took a Karns fastball for a ride over the left field wall.
Offensively the Pirates has six total hits with Eldridge and Henderson each collecting two.
The Pirates will be back in action this weekend when they host Rice in a three-game Conference USA series this weekend. Friday's game will start at 7 p.m., while Saturday's game will be at 4 p.m. (originally at 6 p.m.) and Sunday's at 11 a.m.
