ECU's Jessica Johnson Named C-USA Hitter-Of-The-Week

Sophomore Jessica Johnson has been named Conference USA hitter-of-the-week after batting .529 (9-for-17) over the span of six games, according to a release made by the league Monday afternoon.

During the Holiday Inn Express Pirate Clash, where the Pirates won five straight games and scored a total of 34 runs, Johnson batted .571 (8-for-14). Johnson had three multi-hit games, four doubles and seven RBI. In the championship game against James Madison, Johnson hit a two-run home run to give the Pirates a 5-0 lead. Johnson was later named the tournament Most Valuable Player.

This is Johnson’s first career weekly C-USA honor. She is the first Pirate to receive C-USA Hitter-of-the-Week since Ashley Quick was given the award for the week of Feb. 13, 2006.

“J.J. (Jessica Johnson) was clutch all weekend coming up with key hits that drove in runs for us,” associate head coach Natalie Kozlowski said. “Her power was impressive as she showed great patience and discipline at the plate. Every time we needed that big hit, J.J. (Johnson) delivered. She is maturing as a hitter and has proven to be very dangerous in the box.”

The Laguna Niguel, Calif. native becomes the first Pirate on the 2007 team to receive a C-USA weekly honor.

The Pirates return to action Tuesday, March 6 as they face ACC opponent Virginia in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
