ECU's Sowers To Wear #3 To Honor Late Teammate

Greenville - ECU sophomore pitcher Sthil Sowers will wear the #3 for the rest of the season and possibly his career to honor his late friend and former teammate at North Lenoir, John Alphin.

Alphin died when he lost control of the truck he was driving on Friday afternoon. He was a freshman at ECU and had aspirations of possibly walking on to pitch for the Pirates but back problems kept him off the field.

"He would have worn the #3 had he been able to pitch for us so it was the least I could do." Sowers said after ECU's loss to Rice Sunday

"I miss him. It's something I wanted to do honor him for the rest of the season and maybe the rest of my career."

Sowers and Alphin helped pitch North Lenoir to a state championship win in 2006 and were runner's up in 2007. Alphin wore the #3 during his playing career at North Lenoir High School.

JDLadd, you have no heart. A pun??!! You need to find a life if not some sympathy for what this young man and the family of John Alphin are going through.

I guess you can say that Sthil is "still" sad.
