It's something every parent wants when they send their kids to college -- to know their children are safe.
Now East Carolina University has a new program that goes the extra mile to make sure students and faculty are alerted in case of an emergency.
Its called a Mass Notification System. Tuesday was the first day of testing for the new program where speakers are placed outside of dorm rooms, classrooms, and parking lots. In the case of an emergency those speakers sound off specific alert noises to notify students of danger. ECU students think the new program is a great idea.
Testing will continue throughout the week and then University Officials say the final system should be set and ready by fall for the beginning of the school year.
