The East Carolina University Pirates didn't crack the USA Today Coaches' Poll Top 25 but they did receive 15 votes in the final regular season poll. Only Boston College, Iowa and Florida State were ahead of the Pirates in the "others receiving votes" category.
Steve Spurrier, currently South Carolina's coach, and Tom O'Brien of the Wolfpack both slotted ECU at #23 on their ballots. Seven Conference USA head coaches are among the 61 coaches who vote in the C-USA poll. Mike Price of UTEP and Neil Callaway of UAB were the only two C-USA coaches to include the conference champion on their final ballot.
ECU also received some respect from the MAC conference as Jeff Genyk of Eastern Michigan and Doug Martin of Kent State included the Pirates on their ballots.
Two other coaches included East Carolina on their ballots as Georgia's Mark Richt slotted the Pirates at #25 while Florida Atlantic's Howard Schnellenberger gave the Pirates three votes by putting them at #23 on his ballot.
Rice was the other C-USA team to receive votes. Mack Brown of Texas picked the Owls as has #24 choice while Ohio State's Jim Tressel picked Rice in the 25 slot.
UNC received six votes with two of those coming from their head coach Butch Davis who left the Pirates of his final ballot.
