GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- East Carolina has finally wrapped up the
Conference USA division title that eluded the Pirates in the previous two seasons. But coach Skip Holtz said that doesn't mean this week's regular-season finale against UTEP is a meaningless game.
Holtz said the Pirates (7-4, 5-2) have been working to steadily build the program since his arrival before the 2005 season. Last weekend's win against UAB wrapped up the league's East Division title and sent East Carolina to the league championship game on Dec. 6.
But Holtz said Friday's game is still important because the Pirates are trying to build momentum for that game and improve their bowl standing.
In each of the past two years, East Carolina had lost games that would have won the division crown.
