ECU Wins Second Straight Overtime Thriller, Topping Marshall 19-16

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Ben Hartman kicked four field goals, including a 27-yarder in overtime, leading East Carolina to a 19-16 win over Marshall on Saturday.

It was East Carolina's second consecutive overtime victory after defeating Central Florida 13-10 on another Hartman field goal last week.

Hartman, who also kicked field goals of 31, 51 and 21 yards, missed a 42-yard field goal with 3 seconds left in the fourth quarter after Marshall (4-5, 3-2 Conference USA) tied the game with 1:33 left on Mark Cann's 34-yard touchdown pass to Cody Slate, their second score of the game.

The Pirates (6-3, 4-1) exacted revenge on the Thundering Herd and took sole possession of first place in the Conference USA's East Division. Marshall dashed East Carolina's conference title hopes last year when the Thundering Herd defeated the Pirates 26-7.

The Pirates put themselves in the driver's seat for a chance to play the winner of Conference USA's West Division winner. Tulsa, undefeated in conference play at 5-0, leads the West.

Pat Pinkney, who keyed East Carolina's season-opening upsets of Virginia Tech and West Virginia, returned to the starting quarterback job and went 26-for-37 for 290 yards and one touchdown.

Pinkney's found Davon Drew on a 5-yard touchdown pass to cap a nine-play, 73-yard drive with less than two minutes in the half to take a 13-3 lead.

Marshall's Darius Marshall rushed for 123 yards on 20 carries.

Well at least we won't be reading about these OT Thriller posts after today. You see, ECU will lose to Southern Miss tomorrow by AT LEAST 2 TD's; I GUARANTEE IT!

I read an article on www.brokenfacemask.com which taught me a mammoth lesson in humility. The message I am conveying is that I will NO longer bash ECU NOR any other CFB team that goes to a less prominent post season bowl. Barry: For once try to understand recruiting. I will make it simple for you with ALL due respect. Check UNC(Butch Davis) and Duke(David Cutcliffe) recruiting. First they have first rate HC's that know recruiting in and out. To further prove my point UNC is rated #16. You might a swell consider that this is a good time to recruit if you consider that TN does NOT have a HC for next season. BY the same token NC CFB teams have to compete with FL, FL St. and ND among others. Finally these are the ABC's a CFB HC is evaluated on leadership, teaching and recruiting. Based on those ABC's how would you grade Mr. Holtz? Thank you

I would have to agree about the Tulsa comment. If apples = apples I would imagine Tulsa to win by 20 . However, ECU is known, almost globally, for dropping the cake walk to a crap opponent then beating a team, that on paper, they have no chance against. I give you VT this year (notice I do not include WV)and Boise State last year. As far as qualifying the earlier, I give you Marshall last year and this year, and NC State both years. We (ECU) are consistent at being inconsistent. And yes, anonymous, deadfish is a vault of CFB knowledge. I use some of the sites he uses myself now. BTW deadfish, Donte Moss, Jax HS correct? They made 3A playoffs at 2-9, HSFB is whacked to, West craven is 11-0 in a 3A/4A conference, beat TWO 4A 2007 state champions, and is #2 seed in 3A playoffs to #1 Rocky Mount at 10-1..go figure. BTW, anonymous, my only problem with "fish" is; he loves them %@#&*% USC Trojans! There is nary a team that touches the pigskin i despise more, 'cept for maybe dallas!

Anonymous: Prove you know something about College Football, thank you. Ask Dave, Mr. T and The Pirate Lady if I know anything about CFB? BTW I prove my points with facts NOT with hot air rhetoric like some bloggers here. My USC Trojans are #1 in CFB recruiting according to Rivals.com Rest my case.

Tony, there is NO question that Tulsa will crush ECU. ECU can't beat a team that has a GREAT offense. UCF and Marshall are just DREADFUL and ECU is taking advantage of being in a MISERABLE division!!

I might be repeating someone else but Tulsa will han it to ECU.If they don't I'll eat my hat

deadfish may need to change his name to deadhorse because he is beating one rather mightily.

Big T: It is early yet. Let's face it: as a non-BCS school we will have to wait longer on committments than the traditional powers. I am pleased with the redshirt freshmen that have stepped up to fill roles this year, aren't you? E. Davis, for 1 example? This bodes well for coaching staffs ability to eye talent in recruiting. deadfish: your statement about ECU recruiting "stinks" is the exact archetype of your trite commentary. You prove my point. You rely simply on your $10/month rivals recruiting subscription and then make grandiose proclamations. Funny! Again, rivals will focus on the traditional powers, both because they have the "cream-of-the crop" recruiting options, and also as they generate more cash for rivals.com given these schools fanbase. No, ECU can not compete with USC or other BCS recruiting, to expect as such is foolish. If we get into the BCS, this will change. We have to skin the cat in other ways. For you to continue to pound this drum is yes, overly simplistic.

I would like to see the new Pirate look as it was back in the Ed Emory, Pat Dye era. . I have a plaque with the old Pirate look, and I cherish it greatly. Go EC

Barry, I disagree.  Recruiting is an issue.  Ecu's 2009 "possible" commitment list includes 1-3star and 2-2star rated recruits.  The remaining are oxymoronic outstanding mediocre players at best.  We all want ECU to be part of the big time but with this sort of recruiting it will never happen.  We have to stop fielding teams that when injuries happen to a few players, it cripples the entire team effort.  Dave, I like you pal, and I despise USC but if they play in the Rose Bowl it will be ugly.  USC will win by 30 .  PSUs record is great but it is only because they have, for the most part, played teams only slightly better than the local High School.  For them to lose to Iowa is laughable, and I like PSU.  Its like ECU losing to, well, NC State.  I am elated that we won against Marshall, and after trying to hand them the game.  Thank God, Marshall must not have wanted it and handed it back.  Deadfish, PSU would smoke ECU right now, But if PSU had played ECU in game 1, PSU would have lost
