IRVING, Texas – Senior forward Blair Heffner has been selected as Conference USA’s Offensive Player-of-the-Week, according to an announcement by the league Monday afternoon. It is the first weekly honor of Heffner’s career as she joins Madison Keller and Amber Campbell as Pirate honorees this season.
Heffner scored her team-leading sixth and seventh goals, including the game-winner in double overtime, against Marshall on Friday at Bunting Field. The second tally clinched East Carolina’s first-ever C-USA title and secured the No. 1 seed in the 2008 C-USA Championship that starts Wednesday. She put three of her four shots on target for a mark of .750 and a shooting percentage of .500.
Heffner’s effort also ensured that the Pirates would finish their conference schedule undefeated (7-0-4), a first in C-USA since Charlotte produced an 8-0-2 record in 2002.
East Carolina now turns its attention to the 2008 C-USA Championship, hosted by Rice from Nov. 5-9. The Pirates are the No. 1 seed for the first time in program history and will face the eighth-seeded SMU Mustangs, whom ECU defeated 2-1 earlier this season at Bunting Field. The championship game of the tourney is slated for 2 p.m. on Nov. 9 and will be televised nationally by CBS College Sports.
