The Pirates Take Down the Tigers 30-10

Rob Kass threw two second-half touchdown passes to lead East Carolina to a 30-10 win over Memphis on Saturday.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Pirates (4-3, 2-1 Conference USA). Memphis fell to 3-5 overall, 1-3 in the league.

Kass went 9-of-17 for 167 yards in his first extended action of the season.

East Carolina, which trailed 10-7 at halftime, has outscored its opponents 61-29 this season and outscored Memphis 13-0 to claim a 20-10 lead. Kass, who replaced starter Patrick Pinkney in the first quarter, found Brandon Simmons for a 42-yard touchdown on the Pirates' first second-half series for a 13-10 lead.

A 28-yard scoring pass from Kass to wide receiver Dwayne Harris on the same pass play late in the quarter put East Carolina ahead 20-10. Rob Hartman added a 22-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and Norman Whitley added a 12-yard scoring run with five minutes remaining.

The Tigers lost their first two quarterbacks in the first 11 minutes of the game. Junior Arkelton Hall lasted just six plays before suffering a broken right thumb. He was replaced by senior Will Hudgens, who was in on just six plays before he was hit on his right knee by East Carolina cornerback Darryl Reynolds on a three-yard run around the left end and was carried off the field.

That left junior Brett Toney, who hadn't attempted a pass and played on special teams in his 20 previous games, at quarterback. He completed 11 of 15 for 65 yards.

Curtis Steele ran in from four yards to put the Tigers up 7-0 late in the first quarter. East Carolina tied the game midway through the second quarter on Jonathan Williams' career-long 68 yard touchdown.

Memphis then went on a 16-play, 58-yard scoring drive to close out the half. Vinny Zaccario kicked a 20-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 10-7 halftime lead.

See Dave, was that so hard? LOL And I also look forward to seeing the outcome between PSU and the Buckeyes. I think your guys can pull it out.

There is nothing wrong with playing 2 QB's. Besides, it crates havoc for defensive coordinators to prepare for. When it comes to PSU, we will see how good they really are when they play the Buckeyes Saturday night. A win there would put them #2 and if they win out SHOULD play for a National Title. HOWEVER, I don't like to look ahead but the possibilites are hard to ignore.

I agree with you T; I've always liked the 2 quarterback system. It worked for us last year, and I wish we'd used it a few games back. That's what I meant when I said Kass helped ;-)

Dave, there, pick on Steve, he is an "unrealistic" pirate fan. I pull for them too, but I don't put my life on hold. I was pleased that we won but we have got to develop some better offense. Our offense is, well....offensive at times. No we will not be the BCS buster. By the way ditzy dave, your nittany lions looked awful good. Its so hard to explain how someone so negative can actually get something right. And I agree with pirate lady about dave, but not the game. Playing Kass was not why the game turned out the way it did. The defense opening the whole can of Whip-@$$ on the quarterback(s) is why it ended the way it did. Kass and Pickney compliment each other. One's strengths is the other's weakness. Playing both is the way to go until we recruit a QB that has all the skills in one package. Just an opinion, one I am sure dave will disagree with, at least I hope so. Its much more fun if he does!

Wow Steve, you really told me! I'm going to go and cry in the corner now. Gee whiz!

Pirate Lady you are not much of a fan. True fans watch their team every game.

Guys, don't even bother responding to Dave. He's like flatulence in the breeze...eventually the stink goes away. But I'm glad my boys won. I was in the mountains & I couldn't see or hear the game, so I was very happy to hear the score during one of the ACC games on the radio. But this just puts us at 1-0 again guys..we need to take it week by week. But clearly playing Kass helped us alot. As for the bowl game, forget that, and forget all the people that come here to talk junk. Let's get through the season first. Like DK said, we get it already; ECU will not win a national title. So why obsess over it, unless you have nothing better to talk about?
