Holland’s Contract Amended At East Carolina

GREENVILLE -- The East Carolina University Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved an amendment to Athletic Director Terry Holland’s contract to increase his salary by $32,400 to $356,400 a year.

The board, citing Holland’s leadership and success, made the increase retroactive to Jan. 1, 2008, but specified that he would not be eligible for another raise until 2010.

Robert V. Lucas, chair of the board’s University Affairs Committee, which oversees athletics, said, “We believe that we have strong leadership at ECU, and we want to recognize that leadership and keep the team in place.”

Lucas noted Holland’s accomplishments in such areas as increased attendance at football games and improved academic performance of student-athletes.

According to data released this week, eight ECU sports teams are graduating athletes at a higher rate than the national average. Earlier this year, Conference USA reported that of the 17 varsity sports recognized by the conference, ECU had the best grade-point average in four.

NOTE: Salaries for the athletics director, coaches, and other employees of the Athletics Department at East Carolina University are paid for with funds generated by the department from ticket sales, broadcast revenues, private fund-raising and other sources. State appropriations, which support the academic mission of the institution, are not used.

Whatever Aaron. I also find myself agreeing with Dave. And with ECU in the middle of a hiring freeze, it's interesting to see that Holland is getting a raise. Makes one wonder....

"Mr. T.": Ditto to you and Dave... My USC Trojans spent $8,712,687 in recruiting last year... It leads me to believe that the management needs to take Budget 101!

OMG! I am in agreement with Dave! That 32K raise could have hired another recruiting coach. Something badly needed!

It seems to me that because of the way that ECU athletics are lacking they need to dock his pay.
