GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina finalized preparations for its first intra-squad scrimmage of preseason camp with a two-hour practice in shorts and helmets in slightly cooler conditions Friday afternoon on Hight Field at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
The contest, which will be held at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Saturday afternoon, will serve primarily as a personnel scrimmage designed to produce the program's first depth chart of the season. While head coach Skip Holtz indicated he is looking forward to observing his true and redshirt freshmen get as many repetitions as possible in game-like conditions, he also said that the upperclassmen and the Pirates' kicking game would also experience ample opportunity to compete during the afternoon, especially in open positions.
"There's certainly a lot of competition out there and I expect the scrimmage to start creating some lines of separation," Holtz said. "There are starting and backup jobs that we need to fill. A lot is still up in the air. I'm looking forward to being in a position to evaluate and then formulate our depth chart. Then, we can start putting everything together and start working on getting our packages in place."
As a precautionary measure to ensure freshness for the game, Holtz kept the Pirates out of pads again to minimize contact during Friday's session which mostly stressed individual drills and skeleton work.
"We've had a physical week," Holtz continued. "We've certainly had our share of colliding and banging, so we have a lot guys who are sore. Plus, going in shorts also allowed us to use this practice as an opportunity to polish things up for the scrimmage."
NOTES: At the conclusion of Friday's workout, all players participated in a media training session conducted by Trone, Inc., which provided a hands-on lesson to help the Pirates gain an understanding of success in the public eye and promote a positive image ...
