Daniel Holder pitched five scoreless innings while freshman Trent Whitehead smacked his second home run of the season, a grand slam, to pace No. 24 East Carolina to a 11-2 win over Campbell Wednesday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Whitehead highlighted a seven-run seventh inning that saw the Pirates (19-8) send 12 batters to the dish and record seven hits and extend its lead to 11-1. Bobby Fowler roped a double to right-center notching his first collegiate hit to start off the frame. Harrison Eldridge was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for Ryan Wood, who singled to right plating Fowler. Stephen Batts followed with a double to left field pushing across Eldridge just before Corey Kemp loaded the bases with a walk. Dustin Harrington continued to drive in runs when he singled to left scoring Wood. Whitehead connected on a Wesley Edwards pitch and took it for a ride down the left field line before Campbell (10-18) could record the first out and capped the scoring for the inning.
Holder recorded his first start of the season and improved to 2-1 after allowing just four hits with a pair of walks and five punch outs. Bailey Daniels made his seventh appearance of the season in the sixth allowing one run on two hits with one walk before giving way to Brad Mincey, who worked 1 2/3 innings. Walk-on Britton Cole made his second appearance of the season allowing one run on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Freshman Matt Laney worked a perfect ninth frame striking out one.
Campbell starter Trevor Smith suffered his first loss of the year after giving up two runs on two hits in two innings of work, while walking one and fanning two before giving way to Jeff Hoffman in the third. Hoffman worked two frames allowing two runs on three hits. Josh Fish (2 IP, 1 H, 3 K), Hunter Ford (0.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R), Edwards (0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB), Cody Raisch (0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 K) and Jared Lehman (1.0 IP, 1 H) closed out the game.
The Pirates jumped out to an early 2-0 in the second inning behind a pair of hits. Kemp led off the inning with a single through the left side, but was forced out on Brandon Henderson’s fielder’s choice. Harrington followed with single through the left side advancing Henderson to second. Devin Harris drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Fowler, who reached on an error by Campbell’s shortstop Zack Johnson scoring Henderson. The Pirates second run came on a Smith balk that pushed across Harrington.
ECU added to its lead in the fourth pushing the score to 4-0. Henderson led off with a double to left-center just before Harrington reached on a fielder’s choice. Whitehead advanced both runners 90 feet on a sac bunt and Harris drove in his second run of the season with a single to left plating Henderson. Fowler also collected his second RBI of the season on a sac bunt that scored Harrington.
Campbell cut into the Pirates lead in the sixth making the score 4-1. Brandon Scott drew a one-out walk then moved to second on Johnson’s single to center and came home on Carlton Floyd’s RBI double to left field.
Brian Gana drove in the Camels second run of the game in the eighth putting the score at 11-2 in ECU’s favor. Ellis Lowe reached on a fielder’s choice then stole second and moved to third when Stephen Parsons’ reached on another fielder’s choice setting up Gana’s at-bat where he singled to right.
The Pirates will hit the road this weekend when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face Conference USA foe No. 20 Southern Miss in an important three-game tilt. Senior T.J. Hose will get the start on Friday with a first pitch scheduled for 7:30 pm (EST).
