The East Carolina baseball team collected 15 hits and smacked three home runs to pace themselves to an 11-3 win over in-state foe Campbell Wednesday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Freshman Sthil Sowers picked up his second collegiate win and improved to 2-1 on the year after working a career-high six innings with five strikeouts, no walks and allowed two runs on six hits. From the seventh frame on, the Pirates (16-6) used four different pitchers to close the game in Brett Butts (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1K), Matt Cox (0.1 IP, 1 K), Brad Mincey (1.0 IP, 2 BB, 1 K) and Britton Cole (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K), who made his collegiate debut.
Carlton Floyd suffered the loss for the Camels (9-14) and dropped to 0-2 on the year. He lasted 2 2/3 innings, allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with one walk. Richard Gaito went one inning in relief giving up three runs on four hits before passing the ball to Matt Martinez (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER). Josh Fish (1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K) and Trevor Smith (1.2 IP, 1 H) closed out the game.
ECU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Corey Kemp homered for the fourth time in the last three games with a solo shot to right-center.
The Pirates extended their lead to five, 5-0, in the third frame. Harrison Eldridge singled up the middle with two outs then moved to third on Ryan Wood’s single through the right side. Stephen Batts’ singled up the middle scoring Eldridge and moving Wood to third. Brandon Henderson walked to load the bases just before Kemp singled up the middle clearing the bases with two-RBI.
Campbell plated a run in the fourth to cut into the Pirates lead, 5-1. Ellis Lowe doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning then came around to score when Brandon Scott laced a double to right-center with one out.
ECU responded to the Camels run with four more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-1 lead. Dustin Harrington led off with an infield single which was followed by Trent Whitehead’s fielder’s choice that forced out Harrington at second. After Whitehead was caught stealing for the second out of the frame, Jamie Ray singled through the right side to start the two-out scoring. Eldridge followed with a single down the right field line pushing Ray to third and both came home on Wood’s seventh home run of the season, a three-run blast to right field. Campbell switched pitchers in the fourth bringing in Martinez and Batts greeted him with his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to left to cap the scoring.
Campbell would plate a run in the fifth on Ryan Hamme’s single up the middle that scored Graham Fronk and another in the eighth to close the game at 11-3.
ECU will hit the road for a three-game series on Friday when they travel to No. 19 UCF to open league play on the road. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
