Pirates Fall To Elon 9-6

Bennett Davis drove in four runs including a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to pace Elon to a 9-6 win over East Carolina Wednesday night at Latham Park.

Josh Ruhlman suffered his second loss of the season in a relief appearance working two innings allowing two runs (both earned) on one hit with two walks and one strikeout. Freshman Matt Laney lasted just three innings for the Pirates (1-3) allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits with one walk and one strikeout before giving way to Daniel Holder in the fourth inning. Holder went three innings surrendering three runs (one earned) with three punch outs.

Cory Harrilchak picked up his first win of the season working one inning giving up two runs on two hits. Starter Jesse Lewter went six innings in his first start of the season allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits with six strikeouts before giving way to Harrilchak, Kenneth Ferrer (1/3 IP, 1 BB) and Daniel Britt (1.2 IP, 0 R, save) to closed out the game.

Ryan Wood's three-run shot in the third inning highlighted a four-run frame as the Pirates took an early 4-0 lead. With one out, Justin Bristow was hit by a Lewter fastball, moved to second when Harrison Eldridge drew a walk before Wood's bomb to left field. Stephen Batts continued the hitting with a bunt single down the third base line and moved to third on another ECU single, this time by Kyle Roller before touching home on Jamie Ray's sac fly to centerfield.

The Phoenix answered the Pirates in the bottom of the third plating three runs of their own closing the gap to one, 4-3. Chris Dove lead off the frame with a solo shot to left center for Elon's first run of the game and with one out Pat Irvine drew a walk just before designated hitter Bennett Davis' two-run blast to left field.

In the bottom of the fourth Elon took a 6-4 lead after plating three runs. Mike Melillo doubled to left field to lead off the inning. After a Pirate pitching change and a pinch hitter, Mike Lobacz reached on a error and advanced to third on Harry Austin's double down the left field line that scored Melillo to knot the game at four. With two outs and the bases loaded, Davis gave the Phoenix a 6-4 lead on his double to right field pushing across Lobacz and Austin.

ECU's Roller tied the game at six with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the seventh frame. Batts singled for the second time in the game with a base hit up the middle and two outs setting up Roller's first home run of the season.

Lobacz' infield single scored Neal Pritchard in the bottom of the seventh putting the Phoenix up 7-6. Pritchard led off the inning with a single to left and moved to second on a failed pickoff by Corey Kemp's throw to first. Ryan Adams sac bunt moved Pritchard to third setting up the go ahead run in the inning.

Chase Austin started a two-run eighth inning which saw Elon take a 9-6 lead. With the bases loaded, Austin flied out to Ray in foul territory scoring Jobe. Pritchard followed with a fielders choice that plated Irvine for the final run of the inning.

The Pirates head home for the first time this season on Friday, Feb. 29 when they play host to Monmouth for a three-game series in Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
