Super Bowl XLII will go down as one of the more memorable performances by both sides in the games’ history. After the Giants, who were two-score underdogs, upset the previously undefeated New England Patriots. The Patriots won a shoot-out over the Giants in the last week of the season.
The Giants win meant several people with ties to eastern Carolina would be in line for a coveted Super Bowl ring.
Guy Whimper went to Havelock high school before joining the East Carolina Pirates. The offensive lineman is in his second season with the Giants.
Back up QB Anthony Wright is a Vanceboro native that attended West Craven High school. Wright has been in the league for 9 seasons and has played for five teams. This is Wright’s first Super Bowl championship.
Ronnie Barnes has been with the Giants since 1976. He became the head trainer in 1980 and was promoted to Vice President of Medical Services in 2003. Barnes was the first African-American graduate of the Sports Medicine Department at ECU. He has since been elected to the East Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame and been named a winner of the Outstanding Alumni Award. Barnes is also in the Hall of Fame at Wilson-Fike High School.
Kevin Gilbride, the Giants Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach was an assistant at ECU from 1987 to 1988.
