Pitt County Duo Named To All-C-USA Softball Teams

IRVING, Texas – East Carolina had two players earn All-Conference USA honors, according to an announcement from the league office Wednesday afternoon. Senior left fielder Suzanne Riggs was named to the All-C-USA Second Team while Sarah Christian received C-USA All-Freshman Team honors.

Riggs, a Preseason All-C-USA honoree, picked up second team honors for the second-straight campaign. The Greenville native is the ECU leader in nearly every offensive category this season, including batting average (.331), runs batted in (33), slugging percentage (.573), home runs (eight), on-base percentage (.452) and walks (27). She ranks second in the league in walks, fifth in OBP, eighth in slugging percentage and tied for ninth in home runs.

In only Conference USA games, Riggs stands third in on-base percentage (.493), tied for fourth in walks (14), fifth in batting average (.379), seventh in slugging percentage (.603) and tied for ninth in runs batted in (18). She paces the Pirates with 11 multiple-RBI games and owns squad second-best 10 multiple-hit contests.

During East Carolina’s three-game series at league champion Tulsa, Riggs reached base in her last seven plate appearances and finished the set with seven runs batted in. Last Saturday in the doubleheader at Memphis, she went five-for-six with three RBI.

Christian enters this week’s Conference USA Championship tied for third in the league with 18 victories. She became just the fourth Pirate freshman to record 18 wins during her initial campaign and owns the record for innings pitched by a rookie with 197.2, the third most by any pitcher in C-USA this year.

Within league action, Christian went 8-7 with a 3.15 earned run average. She has tossed complete games in her last six starts and owns a 5-1 record and 1.68 ERA during the span. The Greenville product threw her first C-USA shutout in the series finale versus Marshall and earned all three victories over UTEP to become just the second C-USA freshman to record all three triumphs in a league series since 2005.

At Tulsa, she pitched a career-high 9.1 innings in the series opener and struck out a personal-best five batters. She tossed her first career shutout at Cal State Fullerton, surrendering just one hit.

East Carolina (25-27, 11-12 C-USA) returns to action Thursday in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament. The Pirates enter as sixth seed and play third-seeded Marshall (34-20, 15-9 C-USA) at 5:30 p.m. ET at the UAB Softball Complex in Birmingham, Ala.
