Pirate Softball Downs Marshall 9-1 In Series Finale

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Jordan Lewis and Casey Alcorn each hit a two-run home run and Caroline Umphlett pitched five innings of two-hit ball to propel East Carolina to a 9-1 victory over Marshall in six innings on Saturday afternoon at the ECU Softball Stadium.

Lewis finished the day 1-for-3 and tied her career-high with three runs scored and Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin went 2-for-4 with an RBI, as Alcorn and Abby Wynne drove in two runs apiece on the day.

In addition to surrendering just two hits in her five innings in the circle, Umphlett (4-2) allowed just one unearned run and walked three while matching her season-high with four strikeouts.

East Carolina (16-10, 5-4 C-USA) struck first when it scraped a run across with two outs in the bottom of the second inning on a dropped pop-up by Marshall’s (9-20, 3-6 C-USA) shortstop and took a 1-0 lead.

Lewis led off the bottom of the fourth inning by lining a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run to extend the advantage to 2-0 over the Thundering Herd.

The homer was the fifth of the season for Lewis and the 19th of her career, moving her into sole possession of seventh place on the program’s all-time home run list.

The inning continued with a single by Jelnick and a hit batter, before Kaluhiokalani-Glackin ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Jelnick. Two battes later and with two outs and the bases loaded, Abby Wynne hit a 1-2 pitch into left field to extend ECU’s lead to 5-0.

Marshall scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning to cut its deficit to four, but Alcorn clubbed a two-run home run to left centerfield in the bottom half of the frame to push the advantage to 7-1.

Sarah Christian entered the circle in relief of Umphlett after a leadoff walk to start the sixth. Despite the Thundering Herd loading the bases with one out, Christian induced an inning-ending 3-2-5 double play.

The Pirates scored two additional unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning follow a pair of fielding miscues by Marshall to take a 9-1 lead and claim the run-rule victory.

East Carolina will make the short trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., on Wednesday, March 26, to take on North Carolina in a mid-week, non-conference clash.
