Milner Named To C-USA All-Academic Team

IRVING, Texas – East Carolina redshirt freshman defensive end Matt Milner has been named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team according to an announcement from the league office Thursday. Milner, who sports a perfect 4.0 grade-point average as a biology major, has the highest GPA of the 11-member squad and is also the youngest player on this year’s team.

Milner is a two-time East Carolina Chancellor’s List selection and received a 2009-10 Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal. He was also a C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection at the end of the last school year.

One of his biggest academic accomplishments was becoming an East Carolina winner of the 2010 Merck General Chemistry Achievement Award, which is presented to the top students who have gone through ECU's CHEM 1150/1160 General Chemistry Track. Milner was one of six, chosen from approximately 600, students based on grade-point average and results of the American Chemical Society's first semester general chemistry standardized exam.

On the field, Milner has started 10 of East Carolina’s 12 games during his first season on active roster. His 44 tackles rank as the second most among Pirate linemen. He is also tied for the team lead with 3.0 sacks (-23 yards).

He recovered his first career fumble in the second quarter against Rice, returning it 50 yards to set up ECU’s final touchdown of the opening half. Milner booked a personal-best five solo tackles and recovered another fumble against SMU in the regular-season finale.

In the Pirates’ come-from-behind victory at Southern Miss, Milner sacked quarterback Austin Davis on the Golden Eagles’ final play of the game to preserve ECU’s 44-43 win. Milner also tossed Virginia Tech’s Tyrod Taylor for a five-yard loss to book his first career solo tackle and solo TFL.

Milner and the Pirates play their final game of the season Wednesday, Dec. 29, in the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
