GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women’s basketball team returns to action after a 10-day hiatus due to winter break with a Saturday, Dec. 29, non-conference contest versus Elon at 3 p.m. The game is the first of an ECU basketball doubleheader and will be followed by an ECU men’s game against Norfolk State at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Pirates are 8-3 and have won six of their last eight games. This season, East Carolina is outscoring its opponents by more than 150 points (732-564) and is averaging 66.5 points per game, while holding its counterparts to 51.3, a league low.
East Carolina and Elon will face off for the 10th time in program history and the Pirates lead the all-time series 7-2. Last season, ECU defeated the Phoenix, 60-46, at the ECU Pirate Thanksgiving Tournament on November 27, 2011, at Minges Coliseum. That meeting was the first since 1998 and Elon has not defeated ECU since February 6, 1975, when the Phoenix edged the Pirates, 69-63, in Greenville, N.C.
Britny Edwards leads ECU in scoring (11.7 points per game), rebounding (7.5 rebounds per game), and blocks (18). The redshirt senior center/power forward has tallied 10 assists and 11 steals on the year while shooting 54.8-percent. Her twin sister, Whitny Edwards, is averaging 10.9 points per game and 6.8 boards per contest and has contributed 22 assists and 17 steals this season.
Senior Celeste Stewart has been consistent for the Pirates all season as she leads the squad with 50 assists and has added 99 points (9.0 points per game), 33 rebounds (3.0 rebounds per game), 22 steals and a trio of blocks. Kyani White is the team leader in steals with 32. The redshirt sophomore has also totaled 55 points, 27 boards, and 35 assists, with one block this year.
