Former Pirate Bakich Hired As Michigan Baseball Coach

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Erik Bakich has been hired as the new baseball coach at Michigan.

The school announced the hiring Wednesday. Bakich spent the last three seasons as the coach at Maryland. The Terrapins went 32-24 in 2012.

The 34-year-old Bakich is the youngest head baseball coach at any BCS school. Prior to becoming the coach at Maryland, he was on the staff at Vanderbilt.

Bakich, a 2000 graduate of East Carolina, had a recruiting class ranked in the top 25 by Baseball America at Maryland.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon calls Bakich "one of the top recruiters and developers of talent in collegiate baseball."

Michigan was 22-34 in 2012. The Wolverines announced last month that coach Rich Maloney would not return.
