ECU Women Capture C-USA Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UTEP men and East Carolina women turned in balanced performances on Saturday to capture their respective championships while UAB's Elinor Kirk turned in two record-setting performances on the final day of the 2014 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

For UTEP, Anthony Rotich and Mark Jackson led the way, as both won two events on Saturday and three each over the two-day meet. Rotich defended his 2013 crowns in the 5000, 3000 and mile while Jackson won the long jump, triple jump and 60-meter dash. All told, the duo was responsible for 60 of UTEP's 123 team points. Louisiana Tech (77.5) and East Carolina (71.5) rounded out the top three.

Jackson and Rotich shared men's Performer of the Meet honors while their head coach, Mika Laaksonen, took home men's Coach of the Year honors. Louisiana Tech's Jeremy Hicks was the men's Freshman of the Meet.

"It's great of UTEP to win," Rotich said. It's been a long time since we've won an indoor championship. I am so proud of my teammates and our coaches."

Individually, Randy McCoy of Southern Miss and Trey Hadnot turned in record-setting performances on the final day of the championships. McCoy won the 60-meter hurdles with a C-USA meet-best time of 7.79 while Hadnot lowered the 200-meter record for the second day in a row, clocking a time of 20.81.

On the women's side, East Carolina turned in a complete team performance, recording points in nearly every discipline - sprints, jumps, vault, throws and the relays - on the way to an 88-point performance. UTSA finished second at 73 points and host UAB took third at 71.5.

"It was a great effort, a team effort," East Carolina Head Coach Curt Kraft said following the meet. "We don't do this with one person. The credit goes to everyone involved."

UAB's Elinor Kirk capped one of the top performances of the weekend on Saturday when she won the mile in a Conference USA Championship-record time of 4:41.10 and followed that up with another C-USA record in the 3000 meters (9:10.40) to earn Women's Performer of the Meet honors. She began the weekend by capturing the 5000 on Friday night.

"The goal coming in was to get three medals," Kirk said. "To get that is special. It's great to do that at UAB and at the CrossPlex but it's kind of sad, because it's the last time that I'll compete here."

Craft was named the women's Coach of the Year while UTEP's Florence Uwakwe was named women's Freshman of the Meet.
