ECU Names Rio Johnson As Starting QB

The big mystery at ECU football is solved. Rio Johnson will be the Pirates starting quarterback on Saturday's season opener.

That from head coach Ruffin McNeill just minutes ago as he briefed the media about the upcoming game with Appalachian State.

Johnson was the backup quarterback last season for the Pirates and is a junior this year.

According to ecupirates.com, Johnson "arguably has the most recent game-day experience after serving as record-setting Dominique Davis’ top understudy as a sophomore."

The website also reports Johnson has "a strong throwing arm" and coaching staff "also cites pocket presence, field awareness and developing maturity as three other strong assets."

Johnson is one of several players vying for the QB slot this year. He's listed at 6'2" and 188 pounds. Johnson is from Atlanta.
