GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina sealed its preparation efforts for the second scrimmage of preseason camp with a lively workout in shells Friday morning at Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
The Pirates will follow their 90-minute polish session by heading over to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Saturday morning for another critical test that will help define the depth chart heading into game-plan mode for the season opener against Appalachian State. Following the simulated contest, players will return to the stadium at 5 p.m. to meet and interact with fans during the 18th Annual Meet The Pirates Night.
"I liked the way we approached our work today," third-year head coach Ruffin McNeill said. "The goal is to just keep getting better and show daily improvement. Our big emphasis is to make sure our fundamentals are correct and to improve our overall football intelligence or football IQ."
The majority of Friday’s practice was conducted in team-on-team or skeleton with 13 and 22 minutes, respectively, devoted on each. The team session featured the two-minute drill that enabled the Pirates to address clock management and substitution rotations in an up-tempo environment.
McNeill indicated that Saturday’s scrimmage will mirror last week's contest with approximately 40 to 50 plays scripted.
NOTES: OLB Chris Baker (left hip), OWR Antonio Cannon (concussion) and IWR/TE Justin Jones (neck) missed Friday's workout because of injuries and are listed as "day-to-day" (questionable for Saturday's scrimmage) ... CB Leonard Paulk (right knee), DE Matt Milner (left foot) and IWR Quataye Smyre (left leg) remained sidelined and will not participate in the game ... Saturday's Scrimmage Time: 8:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.; Season Opener: Sept. 1 vs. Appalachian State in Greenville (12 noon).
