Butts Qualifies For High Jump Final In Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. – Pirate junior All-America Tynita Butts took the next step in realizing her Olympic dream Thursday, finishing in a tie for first to qualify for the high jump finals at the 2012 United States Track and Field Olympic Trials at historic Hayward Field.

Competing in the second of two flights, Butts cleared 1.79 and 1.83 meters on her first attempt – one of only six competitors to avoid a miss in the preliminary. The elite field includes American record holder Chaunte Lowe and two-time defending NCAA champion Brigetta Barrett of the University of Arizona.

Butts’ personal-best height is 1.87 meters, but Thursday’s field was pared down to the required 12 competitors at the completion of the 1.83-meter height attempts.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday, June 30 at 8 p.m. ET. The NBC Sports Network will provide live coverage of the day’s events beginning at 9 p.m.
