AP Source: Southern Miss Player Is Paralyzed After Shooting

A person familiar with the situation says Southern Mississippi football player Martez Smith is paralyzed from the waist down after being shot at a nightclub along with two teammates.

The person spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss details of the player's medical status.

Smith, Tim Green and Deddrick Jones were shot in the parking lot of a Hattiesburg nightclub after it closed early Sunday morning. They were celebrating the team's win over 25th-ranked Central Florida on Saturday.

All three players were listed in fair condition.

Police said Tuesday that they have arrested two people in connection with the shooting and they are seeking a third suspect.

From Pirate Nation, thoughts and prayers go out to the University of Southern Mississippi, fans, football players, and the families, especially the one who is paralyzed. It's unfortunate to see this happen as it seems like football players typically get targeted by the young jealous punks who want to start something to ruin their football careers. Whoever did the shooting should at least get life in prison, if not he death penalty. People like those scumbags really make me sick. I hope the guy can make it through and have a chance at a normal life. I can't imagine if that ever happened to one of our football players. I respect the Coach Larry Fedora for the way he has handled this situation. Way to get 2 of the guys Hattiesburg Police.
