IRVING, Texas - East Carolina sophomore Kevin Brandt has been named Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week following his career-best performance in Sunday’s 3-2 victory at Memphis that gave the Pirates a series win on the road league officials announced Monday afternoon.
Brandt tossed his first career complete game in the series finale against Memphis on Sunday, striking out a personal-best 11 batters. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks for his third win of the season. The Fuquay Varina, N.C. native, retired 19 of the last 20 Tigers he faced with Trey Wiedman reaching on an error with two outs in the ninth. From the third inning on he fanned seven batters, including Adam McClain to end the game and he retired the side in five straight innings (4th through 8th).
For Brandt, this is his second career Pitcher-of-the-Week honor following his impressive 10 strikeout performance against No. 1 North Carolina on Apr. 22, 2009 in Greenville, N.C.
The Pirates will be back on the diamond Tuesday, Apr. 13 when they play host to Campbell before hosting UAB in a three-game C-USA series this weekend.
