IRVING, Texas – Following a weekend in which she appeared in four games and did not allow a run, East Carolina junior Toni Paisley was named the Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week according to an announcement Monday by league officials. Paisley picked up three wins and a save in leading the Pirates to a 4-0 record. The weekly honor is the ninth of the Lakewood, Calif., native’s career and first this season.
In the weekend opener Friday against Delaware, Paisley threw a perfect three innings while striking out six. Saturday against Towson, she earned her 59th career win, giving her the eighth-highest total in Conference USA history. She is the only active pitcher to be ranked in the top 10. During the contest against the Tigers, a first-inning walk to Sammi DiPompo broke Paisley’s string of consecutive batters retired at 25, but the two-hit shutout was her first of the season and the 23rd blanking of her career. The 13 strikeouts versus Towson were two shy of her career high and gave her four games this season with double-digit whiffs. Against Morehead State Saturday, Paisley came on in relief of sophomore Faith Sutton and struck out the game’s final batter, who represented the tying run.
Paisley capped off the weekend shutting out Penn State on five hits and striking out nine in the Pirates’ 2-0 triumph. Prior to facing Paisley, the Nittany Lions had not scored fewer than three runs in a game this season. The win also snapped East Carolina’s four-game losing streak to PSU.
The Pirates return to action this weekend in Honolulu, Hawai’i, for the Bank of Hawai’i Invitational Tournament. While in the Aloha State, ECU will face defending Women’s College World Series Champion and current No. 1 team Washington, Seattle and the host Rainbow Wahine. The Pirates’ first game is Friday at 9 p.m. EST against the Huskies.
