ECU Holds Off Tulane At Home To Complete Season Sweep

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Brock Young made two free throws with nine seconds remaining to lift East Carolina over Tulane, 71-68, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Wednesday to give ECU its first-ever season sweep of a Conference USA opponent.

The Pirates defeated Tulane in New Orleans on Jan. 24, 61-46.

Four of the Pirates' five starters scored in double figures led by Young's game-high of 18. Jamar Abrams added 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-9 from behind the arc. Darrius Morrow and Jontae Sherrod netted 11 apiece.

Despite not having the service of its two leading scorers, Tulane placed five guys in double figures led by reserve Kendall Timmons' season-high 16 points. Aaron Holmes, who started in place of an injured Kris Richard, scored 15 points with David Booker and Asim McQueen scoring 12 and 10, respectively. Jordan Callahan dished out 10 assists.

The Pirates held the lead for the game's first 35 minutes before Callahan's jumper put the Green Wave up by one, 63-62, with under five minutes to play.

The two teams exchanged free throws and the lead twice over the next three minutes before Abrams' baseline dunk with 2:02 to play put ECU ahead to stay.

Following a Callahan turnover, Young's floater in the lane with the shot clock winding down put the Pirates ahead by three with 1:23 left.

After Booker had brought Tulane within one and gathered a defensive rebound, Callahan turned the ball over with a chance to go ahead. Young then stepped the foul line and calmly sank both free throws.

The Pirates built a 10-point halftime advantage by shooting 56 percent from the floor in the first half, making 14-of-25 shots, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc. They finished the game shooting 53.8 percent (21-39).

The Green Wave opened the second half on a 16-7 run pull within one-point, 48-47, on a Timmons' layup with 12:33 remaining.

Tulane shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the floor, but just 30.8 percent from behind the arc (4-13). The Green Wave also missed 10 free throws, including two in the final seconds.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for ECU and gave the Pirates their first Conference USA home win of the season.

The Pirates return to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 13, against UTEP. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:05 p.m. EST in El Paso, Texas.
