GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Damier Pitts scored 17 points to lead Marshall to an 83-65 win over East Carolina inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Saturday night. It was Marshall's fourth consecutive victory in the series as it improved to 9-4 all-time against the Pirates.
Chris Lutz netted 13, while Hassan Whiteside and Tyler Wilkerson added 10 points each for the Thundering Herd (13-2, 2-0 C-USA), which won their fourth straight game.
Pitts, Lutz and Cam Miller knocked down three 3-pointers apiece for the Herd, who finished 11-of-23 from behind the arc (47.8 percent).
East Carolina (6-10, 0-2) was just 2-of-13 from long range (15.4 percent).
"They shot the ball better from three than they did from the field and you do not ever expect that," Pirate coach Mack McCarthy said. "It seemed like when they got an open look they knocked it down. We had enough good looks to stay with them, but we missed a lot of open shots that could have made some difference in this game."
Marshall ran out to an early 10-7 lead behind a pair of 3s from Pitts. Chad Wynn's dunk brought ECU within one before the Herd scored six unanswered points to take a seven-point lead.
Miller sank back-back 3-pointers and Johnson made a pair of free throws to push the Thundering Herd out to an 11-point, 24-13, lead as the clock approached the 10:30 mark of the first half.
Pitts sank the Herd's fifth 3-pointer of the half to extend the lead to 13 just before the eight-minute media timeout.
Young's fastbreak layup brought the Pirates to within seven, but Marshall quickly answered with Dago Pena and Miller making consecutive 3-pointers. The Herd made 7-of-15 3-pointers in the first half.
Jontae Sherrod's 3-pointer buzzer beater at the end of half brought the Pirates to within eight, 40-32.
Marshall continued its 3-point barrage in the second half, making a trio of 3-point baskets in the first six-plus minutes. Lutz nailed consecutive shots from behind the arc to push the lead back out to double digits. The Herd maintained a nine-point lead throughout the final 10 minutes of the game.
Brock Young's Layup with 9:52 remaining brought ECU to within nine, 60-51, but that was as close as it would get. Marshall outscored ECU 11-4 in the final five minutes to post an 18-point victory.
Young led all scorers with a career-high 26 points and moved within four assists of the school's career record. Darrius Morrow scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds while playing all 40 minutes.
The Pirates finished 23-of-58 from the floor (39.7 percent), while the Thundering Herd connected on 27-of-57 attempts (47.4 percent).
The Pirates return to the hardwood Wednesday, Jan. 13, against Memphis. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST at the FedExForum.
