East Carolina, the defending Conference USA champs, can start 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2001. The Pirates have won their last two games by a combined nine points. SMU snapped a 16-game conference losing streak on Sept. 12. The Mustangs seek their first 2-0 start in Conference USA since joining in 2005.
East Carolina's defense vs. SMU QB Bo Levi Mitchell. East Carolina's opportunistic defense has intercepted eight passes. S Van Eskridge and LB Nick Johnson have two apiece for the Pirates. Mitchell has passed for 1,209 yards this season. But he has also tossed at least two interceptions in every game this season.
