Pinkney's Play Could Be Key To ECU-UNC Game

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina is looking to stay unbeaten when the No. 24 Tar Heels host East Carolina on Saturday in a matchup of instate rivals.

The Tar Heels (2-0) are coming off a 12-10 win at Connecticut in which the defense helped them hang around long enough for the offense to rally from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit. North Carolina has looked strong on defense with nine starters back, but the offense is trying to overcome bad blocking up front and inexperience at receiver.

The Pirates (1-1) are hoping for improvement from sixth-year quarterback Patrick Pinkney. He hasn't displayed the form that helped the Pirates win Conference USA last year, and that's been a key reason why they've been outscored 31-2 in the second half this year.

That's pretty bad when a 6th year QB plays worse than a true freshman.
