GREENVILLE, N.C. --- A November trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands for a four-day tournament and nine games against teams that participated in postseason play last year highlight East Carolina’s 2009-10 men's basketball schedule released Tuesday.

ECU’s Conference USA slate includes five games against teams that reached the postseason in 2009. The Pirates will be on the road to face three of the top four teams from a year ago, including its league lid-lifter against UAB on January 6.

The Pirates will play home-and-home series with Marshall, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulane and UCF for a fifth consecutive season, while they have single games at home against Houston, SMU and Tulsa. In addition to one game against UAB, ECU will be on the road at Memphis and UTEP.

“Pirate basketball is in for a tremendous challenge with our schedule for the upcoming season,” said Pirate head coach Mack McCarthy. “We again have a number of non-conference games in Greenville, highlighted by Clemson and George Washington, and quality road games within driving distance for Pirate fans such as Wake Forest in Greensboro.

“Opening the season with seven of eight games away from the friendly confines of Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum will be difficult, but will help prepare us for the rigors of conference play. Conference USA continues to improve every year and we have an exciting home conference slate again.”

The Pirates will play 14 games inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum including a visit from Clemson on December 16 and a date with George Washington on December 22. It’ll be the Tigers second visit to ECU in the last three seasons and the first game between the Pirates and Colonials since 1973.

The non-conference schedule also includes two games at the Greensboro Coliseum. ECU will meet Wake Forest on November 15 and then play UNC Greensboro on November 28. The Pirates and Deacons will face off for the fourth-straight season.

East Carolina and Charlotte will renew their series on December 2 at Halton Arena on the UNCC campus. This will be the first meeting between the two since 2005 after the 49ers departed Conference USA for the Atlantic 10. Other non-conference road games include trips to Campbell and 2009 NCAA Tournament participant VCU.

ECU will meet NCAA Tournament entry Tennessee in the first round of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on November 20, and have a second-round date against NCAA Tournament participant Northern Iowa or DePaul. The field also includes Boston College, Purdue, St. Joseph’s and South Dakota State.

“The Paradise Jam will be an opportunity to play against some of the nation’s best teams on a neutral court,” McCarthy said.

The Pirates will open the season on November 13 against The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, before also hosting non-conference foes Coker, St. Andrews and North Carolina Central later in the season.
