GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina continued preparations for its second intra-squad scrimmage of preseason camp with a two-and-a-half hour practice Thursday afternoon inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
After a light polish session Friday afternoon, the Pirates will head over to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Saturday afternoon to engage in perhaps their most important internal test of the young season which will determine the preseason depth chart heading into game-plan mode for the season opener against Appalachian State. Following the simulated contest, players will return to playing surface to meet fans during the 15th Annual Meet The Pirates Night, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.
It’s been a good last two days,” ECU Head Coach Skip Holtz said. “We’ve gotten some critical work in, especially with many of the younger guys who really need the added reps. I’m really looking forward to Saturday and I think it will go a long way in helping us determine what kind of football team we have at this point. There’s not many more days in pads left and I hope we understand that we need to take advantage of those.”
Remaining consistent with other sessions, East Carolina opened with individual drills during the early portion of the practice before the second and third units took the field for a 10-minute, 11-on-11 enhanced team session.
After a five-minute special teams segment, which stressed all phases of the kicking game, the Pirates closed out with an additional 50 minutes of team work that featured all three rotating offensive and defensive units with heavy emphasis again on the No. 2 and No. 3 squads. In fact, the Pirates’ top preseason unit participated in shells throughout the afternoon while the remaining squad dressed in full gear.
