GREENVILLE, N.C. - After what he cited as a lackluster practice Tuesday night, East Carolina Head Coach Skip Holtz and his staff guided the Pirates through a more intense and productive two-and-a-half hour, full-pads workout Wednesday afternoon where temperatures reached into the mid-90’s inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
I thought the guys came out and worked much better today than the last couple of practices,” Holtz said. “We had a team meeting this morning at 8:30 and I expressed my concerns of what I have seen on the practice field and I think we are all now on the same page.
“This is a different type of camp than in years past. We have a lot of guys with experience that have played for us and then we have a lot of guys who haven’t seen any action. Right now, we have about 10 days left in pads to evaluate those guys with no or little experience and see where they will fit in on our two-deep heading into the season opener against Appalachian State.”
ECU opened the workout with brief individual drills and special teams periods before quickly moving to an extended and physical team-on-team session in preparation for its second scrimmage of camp scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
The Pirates emphasized down and distance as well as redzone efficiency during team action before capping off the afternoon with a lively 55-minute, 11-on-11 enhanced team segment that featured rotating offensive and defensive units solely from the No. 2’s and No. 3’s.
NOTES: Junior WR Wes Pittman (ankle) and red-shirt freshman Rahkeem Morgan (leg) did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, while true freshman WR Dayon Arrington (leg), sophomore DB Emanuel Davis (leg), junior LB Melvin Patterson (leg) and true freshman Zico Pasut (shoulder) missed their third consecutive workout … Saturday’s scrimmage will precede the 15th Annual Meet The Pirates Night, ECU’s preseason football fanfest, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. ... Thursday’s Practice Time: 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Season Opener: Sept. 5 vs. Appalachian State in Greenville (12 noon).
