GREENVILLE, N.C. - After four introductory sessions to open preseason camp where the temperature reached in the upper 90’s, East Carolina finally put on full gear for the first time in the 2009 campaign with a two-and-a-half hour practice inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex Tuesday afternoon.
The Pirates worked through the hot conditions before capping the day with a lively 25-minute 11-on-11 enhanced team session which featured rotating offensive and defensive units working on timing and repetition elements of its respective schemes.
“It was the first day in pads and it was good and emotional,” said fifth-year head coach Skip Holtz. “Today was another hot practice and when you go through some of the drill work, individual work and a little bit of the one-on-one sessions it tends to drag a bit because the heat zaps the energy out of you physically and mentally. But when we went to team and they started going against each other, especially with full pads on, things really started to heat up.
“There are a bunch of guys getting some good work in,” he added. “I’m excited where we are right now and can’t wait to get to Saturday where we can get to that first scrimmage and really start to formulate the depth chart and really see who we are going to work with. There are some great competitions going on for those second spots as we talked about in the press conference last week at linebacker, wide receiver and quarterback.”
The Pirates will work in shorts and helmets during the scheduled two-hour morning session before returning to full gear in the evening practice to complete another phase of preseason camp. In addition to Wednesday's double action, ECU also plans to turn in a pair of workouts on Monday, August 17.
