GREENVILLE, N.C. – Former East Carolina standout point guard Jasmine Young has signed a professional contract with Aguas Buenas Tigresas of the Baloncesto Superior Feminino basketball league of Puerto Rico.
Young has joined the team as it enters the league season that began this week and runs through October. Tigresas recently advanced to the final of the 2009 Copa Alcalde, a preseason tournament that featured many of the league’s squads.
"I am very excited to have the opportunity to continue playing basketball,” Young stated. “I couldn't have asked for a more scenic place to begin my overseas career than Puerto Rico. It’s beautiful out here and Puerto Rico is a United States territory, so my family doesn't have to worry about long flights or passports to visit me. I am looking forward to this great experience."
Young finished her Pirate career ranked fourth on the East Carolina career scoring chart and 18th all-time in Conference USA with 1,591 points. She is currently third in C-USA history in career assists (665) and sits in the top two on the Pirate career ledger in 3-point field goals made (first, 177), steals (second, 264) and assists (second). Young was named to the All-C-USA Second Team for four-straight seasons and garnered three-consecutive C-USA All-Defensive Team accolades. She is first player in ECU history to earn C-USA Freshman-of-the-Year honors, picking up the designation in 2005-06. Additionally, Young played in a school-record 123 career games while starting all but one of them.
Turning in three double-digit assists efforts last season, Young tied for the league lead and produced nine such games in her career. The Richmond, Va., native also notched two double-doubles in 2008-09 while earning MVP honors at the Bahamas Sunsplash Shootout.
"I am very excited about Jasmine having an opportunity to play professional basketball,” head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener said. “She was an integral part of our program the past four years and should have a great professional career."
