UNC Hands UNC Asheville 10-4 Loss

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - No. 6 North Carolina tallied four runs in the first inning and never looked back Tuesday night in a 10-4 win over UNC Asheville at Asheville's McCormick Field. Tommy Coyle led the offense with three RBI with a two-run home run, while Chaz Frank posted a career-high four hits in UNC's 10th-straight victory.

Carolina's top four hitters combined for 10 hits on the night as the Tar Heels pounded out 17 hits and eclipsed 16 hits for the third time in the last eight games.

The Tar Heels had seven of their nine starters record two or more hits in the game led by lead off man Chaz Frank who tallied a career-high four hits in six trips to the plate.

Sophomore Hobbs Johnson earned the start and allowed just one run over four innings of work. The Bulldogs notched five hits against Johnson but the left-hander retired five batters via the strikeout to earn his fifth win of the year.

Freshmen Luis Paula, Chris O'Brien and Mason McCullough combined to keep the Bulldogs scoreless from the fifth through seventh innings.
The Tar Heels added six runs over the stretch with Colin Moran picking up a RBI single in the fourth before Chaz Frank and Michael Russell registered RBI singles in the fifth inning.

Tommy Coyle came up with his third long ball of the year in the sixth when he sent a two-run shot over the right center field wall to stretch the lead to 10-1 after Cody Stubbs tallied a RBI single earlier in the inning.

The big inning for the Tar Heels came in the first when they sent 10 batters to the plate and the first eight reached base. Jacob Stallings came through with a two-run double off the left field wall before Tommy Coyle drew a bases-loaded walk. The inning was capped off by a Shell McCain RBI single as the Tar Heels gave Johnson a 4-0 lead to work with before stepping on the mound.

The Bulldogs got to the Tar Heel bullpen in the eighth as they were able to push across three runs to cut the deficit to six at 10-4. Carolina recorded a scoreless ninth to secure the 10-4 win.

Carolina turned in its fourth straight game without an error for the first time in 2012.

Michael Russell, Colin Moran, Jacob Stallings, Cody Stubbs, Tommy Coyle and Shell McCain all registered two-hit games for the Tar Heels in their 10th straight win.
