No. 22 UNC Women Escape ECU, 65-61

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - East Carolina came up just short of No. 22 North Carolina Tuesday as the Tar Heels edged the Pirates 65-61 at the Myrtle Beach Convocation Center in the final game of the Carolinas Challenge. ECU falls to 6-4 overall while UNC improves to 8-2.

Four East Carolina players netted double figures in the contest, led by Chareya Smith's 14 points. Shala Hodges, Tatiana Chapple and Celeste Stewart also put in 12, 11 and 10 respectively. Chapple was the top rebounder for ECU, pulling down seven while Stewart, Katie Paschal and Bryelle Smith recorded three assists each. Chay Shegog was the offensive force for North Carolina, powering her way to 19 points.

The Pirates put up 64 shots, converting 23 of them for a 39-percent mark while the Tar Heels used their height advantage down low to shoot 45 percent. Nonetheless, East Carolina played UNC pretty evenly on the boards, giving up 41 rebounds but securing 38 of its own - including pulling down 14 offensive boards as compared to 13 for North Carolina. ECU also committed just 14 turnovers while picking up eight steals and forcing 17 Tar Heel miscues.

North Carolina was whistled for just 12 fouls in the contest as East Carolina was called for 24, leading to a 27-7 margin in free throw attempts for the Tar Heels.

After She'la White hit a jumper to open the scoring, Chareya Smith dropped in a running layup to make the score 13-8 in favor of the Pirates at the 12:53 mark. UNC would respond with a 13-5 run over the next four minutes as Brittany Rountree converted on two free throw attempts to put the Tar Heels in front by a 21-18 score.

The teams played nip and tuck basketball down the stretch of the half as Krista Gross hit a jumper in the paint to tie the score at 27 with just over four minutes left on the clock. ECU would score eight of the final 13 points as Bryelle Smith drove to the left side and hit a fall-away three at the buzzer to afford East Carolina a 35-32 halftime advantage.

Both squads shot in the mid-forty percent range from the field in the first 20 minutes while also ending up even on the glass at 19 rebounds apiece and virtually deadlocked in the turnover column with UNC committing 10 as compared to nine for the Pirates. Tatiana Chapple led ECU with eight points in the period while Chay Shegog poured in 10 for the Tar Heels.

The Pirates kept their lead during the first four minutes of the second half, assuming a 42-40 lead when Hodges hit a three. However, North Carolina pulled back in front and would stay there at the timeout with 7:44 left in the contest, taking a 51-47 lead on a Shegog layup. Shegog then put UNC in front by six at the 5:35 mark when she put in a bucket in the paint to make the score 57-51.

ECU did not go away, as Stewart put in a layup to pull the Pirates to within 57-56 as the clock wound down to 2:57. East Carolina came up with a defensive stop with 46 seconds left and trailing by one, but Krista Gross snuck into the lane and put an offensive rebound back in to give her team a 61-58 cushion. ECU could not quite catch up as the Tar Heels were able to escape.

The Pirates return to action Dec. 28 when they travel to College Park, Md., for the Terrapin Classic. East Carolina will face No. 20 Delaware at 2:30 p.m. at the Comcast Center before facing either No. 5 Maryland or Lafayette the next day.

Eastern carolina college loses again to the flagship university. That's not news. ECC is pathetic. Its fans are bitter like stepchildren. Probably because they couldn't get into a real school. ECC should go to naia.

Will/Billy/Bill: You have the reasoning and debate abilities of a 5 year old. Who has not heard a 5 year old child on a playground argue back to another child the timeless childhood retort- "you're (note the spelling Will) just jealous"! Yet, you repeat the "jealous" "moron" mantra repeatedly as if it were epiphany. No, it's the equivalent of a temper tantrum; how appropriate. As far as "go back up north", I was born and raised in Raleigh and only lived "up north" the 4 years of undergraduate education. I am home, thank you. With each passing post you appear to be getting more and more frustrated and exhibiting qualities of a boy who has been called out on his ignorance. Really, who is "whining" here? You know what, you are the perfect representation of the UNC-CHeat band-wagon fanbase; you prove EVERY stereotype true. Congratulations, please don't ever change.

I happened upon this thread by accident and have been laughing for 5 minutes straight. If Anonymous vs. Will/Bill were a boxing match, Anonymous knocked Bill out cold in the first round, in the first minute! Bill was like a light weight taking on a world class heavy-weight boxer. The funny part though, Bill/Will NEVER seemed to realize he was getting a total whoopin' and kept coming back to take a bloody beating until he could get off the mat no more. Bill/Will, give it up, you are TERRIBLE at this "sport", LOL!!!

Billy: 1. stop hyper-ventilating with your keyboard, it makes you appear like a drama queen. 2 Cornell has little to no history of playing the UNC-CHeat, so I'm hardly "tired of losing to those Heels!!", to quote your in-eloquence. Cornell is first and foremost & primarily an academic institution first, something UNC-CHeat has forgotten as the scandals of the past two years aptly demonstrate. Why do you continue to bring up the Pirates with me? That is irrelevant to me. 3. You continue to ignore my major argument: that you are a "FAN!!!" (to again quote your hyperbolic in-eloquence) of a school whose alum. look down upon you for your working class, uneducated and primitive ways. Perhaps you are too simple to see their disdain for you? Happy Holidays.

Bill: Have you ever heard the expression... "you're a day late and a dollar short"? I bet you have... By the way, what year did you graduate from UNC-CHeat? Didn't think so. Now scurry off to Wal-Mart for some of those pre-Christmas powder blue walheel specials on sweatshirts with goats pictured on them.

Why are you people so negative? The ECU Woman's team plays good hard, fast basketball, and do draw more than most college games. Only reason the men get folks is $5 tickets. As for HS games, well what else are you going to do? If you do not like the Pirates, just shut up and move to an SEC town. Get a life.

Good question. Here is the answer: this WITN comment board draws people that have many negative personal issues and are dissatisfied with themselves and the direction of their miserable lives. In turn, these people displace their anger, resentment and frustration onto what seems to be other individuals and institutions, but is really an inanimate object (this WITN commentary site). As this is a local website, these miserable people (referenced above) take out their aggression on the most powerful institution that is represented in this locality (ECU). Quite simple, really. Dear WITN malcontents: this is your free psychological education for today. You're welcome.

I was there and as an ECU alumnus I was proud. It was at least 90 percent ECU fans there and they cheered the team after the game as well. The pirate nation was loud. This goes to show you that ECU has one of the best fan bases in all of college sports!

Mr. Reason: It is perfectly reasonable to make "fanbase" and "anything" one word. Sincerely, Mrs. Reasonable English Teacher trying to save you time and character-space. Speaking of "character", please search for some.

There were less than 1100 people at the game, so the PierRats fan base did not exactly pack the house. There will be more fans at most of the local high school girls Christmas tournaments. That being said, it was probably ECU's best game of the year
