No. 11 Hokies Hold Off Pirates 17-10

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Josh Oglesby ran for the go-ahead 10-yard score with 7:30 left, helping No. 11 Virginia Tech beat East Carolina 17-10 on Saturday to give coach Frank Beamer his 200th win at the school.

David Wilson ran for 138 yards to lead the Hokies (2-0) and quarterback Logan Thomas struggled in his second career start while the Hokies also committed 12 penalties and committed two turnovers, but their defense completely shut down the Pirates' high-powered passing attack and held East Carolina (0-2) to 112 total yards.

That included minus-15 yards rushing, second fewest in ECU history.

Michael Dobson ran for a 2-yard touchdown for the Pirates. But in an unusual twist, it was their defense -- among the nation's worst last year -- that kept East Carolina in it until late.

This loss hurts. This week the defense shows up and the offense abandons us. Poor play calling by Lincoln Riley. Poor throws by Davis and receivers dropped to many balls. My family and I have seen this movie many times over a thirty year span and it always has the same heartbreaking ending.Capital improvements are nice but same outcomes year after year. Successful programs do not accept moral victories. Our talent is still not up to par with the big boys. Given the number of penalties and turnovers, we should have won if the offense would have shown up. ECU never plays a complete game on both sides of the ball and for the duration of the game.

I wouldn't talk a lot smack if I were you. Your beloved Penn State was man handled by Bama. The game wasn't even close. Once again Joe Pa shows he does not have what it takes to beat a top caliber SEC team.
