NC State's Doeren Gets Started With Spring Drills

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- New North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren is getting the first looks at his Wolfpack team.

N.C. State started spring practice Tuesday, giving Doeren and his staff their first chance to teach players everything from new terminology to where to line up.

The school hired Doeren from Northern Illinois to replace fired coach Tom O'Brien, whose program seemed stuck in neutral for much of his six seasons.

Doeren says it will take a few days to get an idea how much the team has really learned from studying film before the start of spring practice.

Cornerback Dontae Johnson says the players were "anxious and excited" to get started with workouts.

N.C. State finished 7-6 last year and lost to Vanderbilt in the Music City Bowl.
