RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- New North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried says he's working to change his players' mentality and build new habits for a team that hasn't been to the NCAA tournament in five years.
Gottfried took over in April after Sidney Lowe resigned following five struggle-filled seasons. N.C. State managed just a 25-55 record in Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season play under Lowe and never finished higher than ninth in the league.
Gottfried says changing the program's fortunes will be a long process, though he says the players "want to believe that we can win." He also didn't sound deterred about going up against ACC rivals Duke and North Carolina in recruiting, saying he'll go hard after any player he wants regardless of who N.C. State is facing.
